  1. SPC 1

A tale of a government responding to a 1998 Te Puni Kokiri report "Progress Towards Closing Social and Economic Gaps Between Māori and Non-Māori".

And the consequent backlash against any focus on improving the lot of Maori (the other one was to change to the ECA – today manifest in opposition to FPA/Industry Awards and Pay Equity).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Closing_the_Gaps

To the extremis in the form of Donald Brash wanting to be rid of the Maori Seats and leading Hobson's Pledge.

Don Brash being the one who opposed tax credits based on family size and income levels, rather than across the board (most to the rich) tax cuts.

In many ways Brash personifies the singularity that unites the current 3 headed coalition.

  2. SPC 2

The other notable issue of that era was the Foreshore and Seabed Act that claimed public domain and right of public access (not a block on Maori customary use claims).

The 2011 replacement said no one owned this land area, but Maori could claim customary use rights.

Those who think this served Maori, look at the actions of the current government.
